Di wɛt ɔs na Wɛlintɔn Strit | The White House on Wellington Street (2025)

Watercolour on Paper | 44cm x 88cm

From the Curator:

Di Wɛt Ɔs na Wɛlintɔn Strit (The White House on Wellington Street) portrays a once-familiar building at the intersection of Wellington and Lightfoot Boston Streets — a structure now lost to redevelopment. John Francis captures it as it was, poised in morning light, before the hum of construction replaced its stillness. His transparent washes of blue and amber evoke both memory and reverence, honoring the architecture that shaped Freetown’s character. The work stands as a record of disappearance and a testament to endurance — a reminder that the city’s beauty often lingers longest in the places that no longer stand.
