Clement Gbegno

Clément Ayikoue Gbegno is a multidisciplinary Togolese artist whose practice engages cycles of disappearance, renewal, and the layered construction of identity. Rooted in his philosophy studies and early experience as a painter since secondary school, Gbegno brings a reflective approach to material and form. His artistic journey began with a decisive act — selling inherited land to pursue formal training at INSAAC in Côte d’Ivoire, followed by studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, France.

Central to his work is the concept of décomposito-recomposition — a personal methodology of breaking down and rebuilding memory, matter, and presence. Through mixed media, including rope, pigment, plaster, and found objects, Gbegno crafts symbolic compositions that explore rupture, intimacy, and transformation. His work invites viewers to contemplate the invisible forces and emotional textures that shape human experience.

Clément Gbegno will be represented by unx-art at the inaugural edition of Africa Basel, taking place from 1–22 June 2025 in parallel with Art Basel, the world’s largest contemporary art fair.

Stay tuned to discover his newest works and exclusive Africa Basel curation.
