Kɔmbra | Nursing Mother (2025)

Watercolour on Paper | 55cm x 27cm

From the Artist:

Kɔmbra, meaning “nursing mother” in Krio, reflects John Francis’s enduring fascination with the everyday poetry of Freetown life. Painted in delicate watercolor, the figure of a woman moving forward with her child fastened in a lappa speaks to both tenderness and resilience. Once a familiar sight across Sierra Leone, this gesture of motherhood in motion embodies strength, continuity, and care. Francis transforms a simple daily act into a visual hymn to women’s endurance — a fleeting moment turned into memory.
