Fourah Bay Road (2025)

Watercolour on Paper | 44cm x 42cm

From the Curator:

Fourah Bay Road revisits a building that once stood in quiet splendor near Bishop Johnson Memorial School. John Francis photographed it years ago, when its paint was fresh and its shutters still open to the light. Today, its windows are boarded, its façade fading — but in watercolor, it lives again. Through translucent layers of crimson and blue, Francis restores its spirit, reminding viewers of its prime rather than its decay. The work stands as both record and elegy, capturing the fragile beauty of Freetown’s wooden houses and the artist’s devotion to preserving their memory before they vanish completely.
