Being I – 2022
Acrylic on canvas | 75.5 x 61 cm
From the series titled ‘IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS’ which explores individuality, finding answers and a catharsis for relief, self-discovery, finding solace and courage to be with the uncertainty of what follows. This series leaves a question to if chaos can be a good thing, if it’s something worth embracing.
“Being I” illustrates finding the courage to be you. To be self-aware, to know your worth and live your truth. It takes courage to live outside of unrealistic standards and societal expectations, especially ones expected of women.
‘To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, day and night, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human can fight; and never stop fighting’. __E.E. Cummings

About the artist
Judith Yahaya, born in 1998, is a contemporary artist from Northern Nigeria who delves into the intricate dynamics of social conditioning and the interconnectedness (1) of people and their environment. Graduating with a B.A. in Fine Art from the renowned Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Judith's work examines the links between ideologies, structures, and psychological patterns, forming the basis for human and social interaction.
Her artistry is marked by a distinctive style and various unique techniques. Judith employs the 'reflex' painting method, using bold colors to depict the reflection of surrounding hues on an object. This method transcends mere visual effect, symbolically reflecting the environment of her subjects both physically and spiritually, revealing a state of consciousness. The spiral patterns in the backgrounds of her paintings are synonymous with African symbolism, adding layers of cultural depth.
Judith's artistic expression is deeply influenced by African society, highlighting issues of gender and identity. Her work, informed by real-life experiences, embodies emotions, using vibrant colors to capture their essence and intricate textures to convey realities. Through her art, she not only promotes individuality and questions societal structures but also reimagines possibilities, inviting the audience to connect with her on a deeper level.
Judith currently practises her art between Abuja and Qatar. She has participated in several exhibitions, with recent showcases in Nigeria, Italy, New York, and Qatar. Her accolades include being the First Nigerian Art Olympiad winner. Her art is a powerful medium for promoting individuality and questioning established norms.
(1) Refers to the state of being connected.
