Griot I | The Storyteller I (2025)

Watercolour on Paper | 55cm x 27cm

From the Artist:

Storyteller portrays a Yalunka griot — guardian of oral tradition — playing the kondene, an instrument once used to accompany hunters. Through translucent washes of watercolor, John Francis captures both melody and memory, the sound of history echoing through pigment. The musician’s feathered headdress and calm dignity evoke the endurance of West Africa’s storytelling lineages. Beyond portraiture, the work becomes a meditation on continuity — how culture sings its way forward even as generations change.
