Beneath Her Shades at Dove (2025)

Watercolour on Paper | 33cm x 33cm

From the Curator:
Set in the dense activity of Dove Cot — one of Freetown’s most vital urban markets — this painting highlights the poised resilience of a woman seated beneath her umbrella, surrounded by the colours and textures of everyday trade. Dove Cot, known formally as Hagan Street Market, operates as both economic engine and social anchor for the city’s eastern districts. Its traders, predominantly women, negotiate space, livelihood, and community amidst constant movement.

The woman at the center of the bustling market embodies the essential yet often overlooked labor that sustains urban life in Sierra Leone. She represents the expertise and endurance of the women who bring structure to one of Freetown's most dynamic public spaces.
