Ɔba Sakvil Strit | Aerial View of Sackville Street (2025)

Watercolour on Paper | 40cm x 58cm

From the Curator:

Ɔba Sakvil Strit, meaning “Over Sackville Street” in Krio, depicts an early morning view of one of Freetown’s historic streets. John Francis paints the scene from above — a gentle descent of light across timber façades and awakening figures. The street, still quiet before the day’s bustle, glows with the warmth of lived history. Traders move toward their shops and corners, their silhouettes dissolving into the city’s rhythm. Through transparent layers of watercolor, Francis turns the ordinary dawn of Sackville Street into a meditation on continuity — how a city, like its people, greets each day by remembering its past.
