About the artist
Akachukwu Chukwuemeka – artist name Akabeks – was born in 1971 at Amata Mgbowo in Nigeria. He is a 1998 graduate of painting from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka in South Nigeria.
His artworks are his personal dialogues with his environment: They are like a collection of short stories where he explores social, political, cultural, and religious conversations in the neo-colonial environment. Each piece is a complete narrative, yet each completes another; they are like the tales of a society, where the story of each individual and a group come together to create the complete story.
Akabeks wants his art to be seen as a collection of short stories to occupy a spot in the soul of anybody who makes contact with it, to probe their quiet moments thought processes, and calm them like the ocean settling down after high tide.
Exhibited unx-art artworks originate from his series 'Forms from my Sky', when Akabeks decided to break out from the classic conventional oil canvas and traditional 'Uli'. The series was sparked by childhood memories of gazing at the twilight sky. It embarks on a dreamlike and dazzling series featuring a hundred paintings that showcase his ingenuity and love for experimenting.
He currently resides and practices in Abuja, Nigeria.
