Émancipation (2024)
Mixed media | 64 x 113 cm (25 x 44 in)
From Pierre:
"It’s a small canvas, but it demands a lot of energy from me. It reflects my current view of the world. I call it Émancipation, but not in the traditional sense of the relationship between men and women. Here, I’m talking about spiritual emancipation—that moment when a person becomes afraid of themselves, generating an inner energy without having the will to follow it through.
They are afraid of themselves but can’t admit it, and that fear shows up in their behavior: they shift the blame onto others. Real emancipation is about mastering and controlling yourself. That’s when the fear stops.
Humans, as fearful beings, struggle to take control of themselves. They are caught in the duality of their animal nature—creating an energy they become afraid of and submitting to that energy instead of mastering it."

About the artist
Born on December 21, 1980, in Lomé, Togo, Pierre Akoété Segoh is a painter and emotion dissector who turned to art during a defining moment in his life. After the loss of his father at 17, he had to abandon his studies to support his mother and siblings. In the face of these challenges, art became both a means of survival and a form of self-affirmation, setting him on a journey of resilience and creative discovery.
Two pivotal moments shaped his artistic evolution: the first in 1998, when a painter-mentor encouraged him to deepen his exploration of painting, and the second in 2013, when a residency at “La Cité des Arts” in Paris broadened his perspective and refined his practice.
Segoh describes his process as “an autopsy of my emotions and passions.” His art merges human and animal forms, symbolizing the inner conflict between primal instincts and aspirations for higher meaning. Rather than protest or denunciation, his work reflects inquiry and contemplation, drawing inspiration from Saint Augustine, Aristotle, and Martin Luther King Jr.
With exhibitions in Paris and Rotterdam, and an upcoming show in Marrakech, Segoh continues to create thought-provoking narratives from his atelier in the quiet, green suburb of Lomé, bridging personal experience with universal truths.
