35 yards deep into the unknown (2024)
From Evans, the Artist:
“This work was inspired by a conversation with a fisherman from the Takoradi community in Ghana. He explained how they cast their nets about 35 yards deep, hoping for bigger fish but never certain of the outcome.
That uncertainty made me reflect on the slave era, when people were taken from their homes across the sea, stripped of identity, with no assurance of survival. Themes of labour, trade, migration, and commerce shaped this piece.
What moved me most was the audience response, the memories and emotions it stirred in them after engaging with the work.”

About the artist
Evans Torngmortey Akornor, born in 2001 in Ningo—an exquisite coastal village in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region—is a dynamic force in the contemporary art scene. With a BFA in Painting and Sculpture from the esteemed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he is an active member of the blaxTARLINES collective in Kumasi, where innovation flourishes.
Akornor’s artistic journey is deeply embedded in the rich textures and tensions of coastal life. He draws inspiration from the behaviors of fishermen, the harmonic sounds of metallic tools, and the rituals of extraction peculiar to his community. Through this lens, he transforms everyday materials—such as sea water, fishing nets, anchors, and ropes—into poignant carriers of memory, myth, and resistance.
Though rooted in painting, his artistic expression transcends into performance, sound installation, video, and spoken word, consistently exploring themes of migration, chaos, and rebirth. His debut solo exhibition, SUPER-imPOSES I, held at the MasterCard Foundation building in Kumasi, showcased his adventurous spirit and commitment to cultural reflection. Subsequent exhibitions like Flames of Wrath and Letters from an Unknown Writer enriched his narrative, weaving together influences from music, religion, literature, and oral histories into a living archive teeming with transformation.
For Akornor, art serves as a motherboard of possibility, where the interplay of coincidence and community informs form and meaning. His work challenges viewers to engage with not only the visual aspects but also the emotional resonance, memories, and reimagined narratives that art can evoke.
Stay connected to witness Akornor's unconventional journey and the unfolding of his creative narratives.
