Artist in Focus: Victor Chibuike

Victor Chibuike is a photographer and art director whose work transcends the ordinary, diving deep into the recesses of the human mind to create art that is both enigmatic and profoundly impactful. Originating from the lively streets of Suleja in Niger State, Nigeria, approximately 30 km from the capital, Abuja, Victor has established himself as a prominent figure in the world of conceptual photography. As a self-taught artist with over a decade of dedication to honing his craft, Victor has become renowned for his surreal and conceptual ideas that challenge conventional storytelling, compelling viewers to embark on a journey through the mysterious and the sublime.

The Alchemy of Storytelling

Victor Chibuike’s background in art direction and fashion styling is not just an influence on his work—it’s the very foundation of his creative process. He describes his artistic journey as one driven by the beauty of alchemy, a process where he redefines trashed items and materials to serve a greater purpose in his art. "From the genesis of my creative journey, I have always been compelled by the beauty of alchemy," he explains. "I refine these elements, infusing them into my storytelling, which helps lock in my ideations and, through styling, it becomes even more surreal."

This approach allows Victor to create visual compositions that are both tangible and otherworldly, a blend of reality and imagination that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The suspenseful atmosphere that permeates his work is not accidental but carefully crafted through storytelling, costumes, set design, and composition. "The skill of storytelling concealed in costumes, set design, styling, and most importantly, composition, has helped me so far in my art creation," Victor notes.

Transforming ordinary into surreal narratives.

Translating Imagination into Reality

One of the most intriguing aspects of Victor Chibuike’s work is how he translates abstract, imaginative ideas into visual compositions that resonate with his audience. His process begins with three simple but powerful questions: "What, Why, and How."

"What body of art do I want to birth into existence?"

"Why is this work important? What is the essence of the work I’m creating, and how will the storytelling impact and inspire my audience?"

"How will I execute my ideations, from costumes to curating models, photography, and set design?"

Victor’s meticulous approach ensures that every detail aligns with the "big picture" he envisions in his mind. He knows he’s captured the perfect shot when all the elements—costume, model, set design—come together to match the vision in his head. "The camera lens is an extension, capturing what the mind has seen," he says, highlighting the seamless connection between his imagination and the final image.

Themes That Resonate

Victor Chibuike’s work often explores deep psychological and philosophical concepts, as seen in pieces like "Still Mind". His choice of themes is a process of deep reflection and connection with the world around him. "I get inspired by people's stories and shared experiences", he shares. "A single word can spark the creative surrealism in me, and the next question to myself would be, ‘This has to be a theme for my next project. How do I birth a visual story from this?’"

The use of traditional African elements in his work is another defining characteristic of Victor’s art. In works like "Élever", these cultural motifs are not just decorative—they are integral to the broader themes of strength and identity. "The infusion of African elements in my works is to constantly remind and highlight the rich uniqueness and versatility of the African culture that we represent and stand for," Victor emphasizes.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Victor Chibuike envisions a future where his art continues to challenge and expand the boundaries of storytelling. He sees himself taking on more challenging projects that make a significant impact on the creative world. "In the coming years, I envision myself having a track record of several successful and innovative projects that have brought a significant impact to the creative world," he says.

Victor Chibuike's work has earned him notable recognition within the creative community, including the Best Conceptual Photographer award at the 2023 Nigeria Creative Arts Awards and features in prominent art publications like Art Afrique and Contemporary Lens. Victor’s striking visual narratives have also been showcased in several international exhibitions, further cementing his reputation as a leading voice in conceptual photography. His achievements are a testament to the power of imagination and the importance of staying true to one’s roots while pushing the boundaries of what art can achieve. As he continues to evolve and challenge the status quo, there’s no doubt that Victor will leave a lasting legacy in the world of conceptual photography, inspiring countless others to explore the depths of their own creativity.
