Artist in Focus: Helen Nzete

We are delighted to finally add a female artist to our portfolio, and with her a rather special series of works: "V is for..." by Helen Nzete holds a special place in our founder Sarah Hachi-Duchene’s heart for several reasons. "V is for..." embraces a distinctly feminine viewpoint, celebrating both womanhood's gentle and robust characteristics. The subtle elegance of flowers is utilised to emphasise essential feminine qualities. From an aesthetic standpoint, the watercolour artworks are remarkably detailed, inviting viewers to take their time to delve into the depth of these endeavours.

As renowned Art and Design critic Dr Adewumi Kehinde Christopher put it: "The allure begins with the exquisite depiction of the petals, leading one on a path to gradually or suddenly uncover the feminine nuances in Helen's works."

About Helen Nzete

Born in 1986, Helen Ogochukwu Nzete is much more than an award-winning artist. She is a perceptive observer, a sensitive soul, and expresses herself through art, bringing societal details to life. Graduating from the renowned Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria with a specialisation in Fine Arts and a focus on Sculpture, Helen's artistic endeavours go beyond traditional painting.

Breaking Conventional Boundaries

Helen's art defies conventional boundaries. Her creations are a seamless blend of everyday elements like beads, coins, and newspapers, capturing the subtleties of daily life. This unique combination harmoniously merges aspects of nature, emotions, the environment, and a touch of rebellion.

Art as a Medium for Change

Fuelled by an unwavering commitment to addressing societal issues, Helen's mixed media paintings dive into understanding people's minds, fearlessly challenging society's shortcomings and advocating for change. Her self-reflection drives her to explore new techniques, utilising art as a powerful tool to connect with people.

Journey through Zaria University

As a student at The Zaria Art School, Helen delved into the roots of her artistic journey: "The Zaria Rebels" shaped how she created art (for more details on Zaria rebels' legacy, have a look at our article: Country in Focus: Nigeria. The influence of trailblazers such as Demas Nwoko, Yusuf Grillo, and Uche Okeke, along with influential professors like Jerry Buhari and Ken Okoli, strongly impacted Helen's defiant attitude towards art. Having a rebellious spirit from a young age, connecting with these influential figures guided her in using her voice to bring about positive societal changes.

Artistic Style and Techniques

As an artist who works with various forms of media, Helen displays a unique style that involves using different materials, trying new things, making art interactive, and combining uncommon elements. Her way of telling stories through ideas and skill for installations creates a rich and dynamic artistic landscape that evolves as she integrates new tools and platforms.

Many of Helen's artworks focus on "Portals," using eyes, mouths, and heads to signify transitions and changes. In our curated exhibition "V for …" the Vulva expresses her concerns about how women are perceived based on cultural and religious differences. Helen's mode of expression is constantly changing, reflecting a dynamic artistic evolution.

Helen draws inspiration from daily encounters and personal experiences as a child. Stories from people and societal happenings fuel her creative flame, guiding her brushstrokes towards impactful storytelling.

Career and Impact

Significant awards have consecrated Helen's singular approach and techniques. Recognitions include the Visual Arts Competition by the Spanish Embassy in 2021, which allowed her to discover the Spanish art scene. Her artwork, 'Generations 2,' graced the cover of the book 'In Her Words,' and was featured on the Cambridge Africa official site. A pinnacle moment was her selection as the 'Inspiring Artist of the Year 2023' award from the National Gallery of Arts of Nigeria, a pinnacle moment.

Legacy and Future Outlook

Helen envisions her work continuing to impact society, giving a voice to those unable to express themselves. She hopes her art's impact will positively influence globally, creating far-reaching and comprehensive effects.

As she gradually shifts towards installations, having already exhibited at prestigious events, we expect Helen to display in notable galleries and museums worldwide. Her art direction points towards a future centred around child rights and the effects of childhood trauma on adults, promising a thought-provoking solo exhibition in 2024, complete with her third installation.

Helen Nzete's journey involves creative growth, active social participation, and a constant drive for artistic development. We’re inviting you to stay on the lookout to watch as her characters continue to tell stories that transcend time and borders.
