Artist in Focus: Judith Yahaya
Judith Yahaya, born in 1998, is a contemporary artist hailing from Northern Nigeria. Her work delves into social conditioning and the interconnectedness of people and their environments. With a B.A. in Fine Art from Ahmadu Bello University Zaira, Judith has developed a unique artistic style that uses the 'reflex' painting method. This technique involves reflecting surrounding colors on the subjects she paints, symbolizing both physical and spiritual connections to their environment. Her vibrant use of color and intricate patterns draws attention to issues of gender and identity, deeply influenced by African society. Judith’s work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across the globe, earning her several prestigious awards. She currently splits her time between Abuja and Qatar, continuing to push boundaries and promote individuality through her art.
The Art of Reflection: Techniques and Inspirations
Reflex Painting Method
Judith's signature 'reflex' painting method is a fascinating technique that reflects the surrounding colors onto the subject. She explains, "The reflex painting method is a technique where surrounding colors are reflected on an object or surface. I developed this technique to visually express how people are connected to every society they find themselves in and how it shapes their identity and mentality."
Using acrylic as her primary medium, Judith has recently started incorporating pastels and oil colors to add versatility to her work. The technique has evolved from a simple artistic approach to a profound symbol of interconnectedness. "The subjects don’t just reflect their environment in a physical way but a spiritual way. It’s a representation of influence and that interconnectedness," she says.
Themes and Motifs
Judith’s art primarily addresses issues of gender and identity within the African context. "These issues are predominant and often interconnected with other issues we face daily," she notes. Her frequent use of spiral motifs in the background of her paintings is a nod to the Nsibidi language system - an ancient ideographic writing system used by various ethnic groups in southeastern Nigerias - symbolizing the circle of life and the potential for growth and change. "The use of this motif highlights the possibility of different outcomes. A constant reminder that things change, a glimpse of hope," Judith explains.
Inspiration for Judith comes from her surroundings, both natural and social. "Whenever I find myself in a place, I take note of my surroundings which is why my paintings are rich with beautiful scenery. From the skies to the fields and nature surrounding us to social gatherings and personal spaces, I take inspiration from everything," she shares. This deep connection to her environment is evident in the vibrant and intricate forms she creates.
Career Highlights and Impact
Memorable Exhibitions
Participating in exhibitions worldwide has been a transformative experience for Judith. Her first exhibition in Japan was a turning point, convincing her to pursue art in university. "It introduced me to new perspectives not just in art, but in culture and daily life. For the first time, I encountered something out of my usual environment, making me believe that I could push boundaries with Art," she recalls.
Exhibiting in Qatar was another significant milestone. "It was interesting to see how artists from different backgrounds and cultures communicated through Art in unique ways and forms," she says. These experiences have opened up new opportunities and expanded her artistic horizons.
Winning the Nigerian Art Olympiad
Judith’s accolade as the First Nigerian Art Olympiad winner was a pivotal moment in her career. "For the first time, I could actually see a career in Art and I pursued it," she says. This achievement allowed her to represent Nigeria internationally, solidifying her dedication to art. "I participated in more art activities that introduced me to the art world in Nigeria, motivating me to study Art later in university," she adds.
Legacy and Future Outlook
Exploring New Themes
Judith plans to continue exploring themes of gender and identity, with a future focus on migration within these contexts. "The issues within gender and identity are vast. In the future, I want to explore migration within the contexts of gender and identity," she reveals. This evolving focus reflects her commitment to addressing relevant social issues through her art.
Living and working in both Nigeria and in Qatar has provided Judith with diverse perspectives that influence her work. "Each environment offers a unique dynamic, whether socially, culturally, or professionally," she notes. While her Nigerian roots deeply impact her art, practicing in Qatar has introduced her to new experiences and audiences. "There is no place like home, but practicing in both regions has expanded my horizon," she says.
Judith Yahaya’s journey as an artist is a testament to the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect people. Her work not only reflects her surroundings but also challenges and reimagines societal norms, making her a significant contemporary artist to watch.
